Gordon Dyer

Gordon W. Dyer, age 95, of Battle Creek, passed away Friday, December 22, 2017. He was born December 30, 1921 in Roanoke, Virginia the son of William H. and Bessie (Wade) Dyer. He is survived by his wife, Maureen Glesner Dyer, whom he married on November 20, 1954; children: Linda Sue (Tom) Smith of Kentwood, Peggy Dyer Wilson of Evington, VA and John Gordon (Marianne) Dyer of Oxford,; eleven grandchildren: Natalie Smith, Lauren (Chris) Pontoni, Brett Gardner, Dustin Hopkins and Lacy Hopkins, Michael (Margie) Dyer, Matthew Dyer, Andrew Dyer, Sherry Wilson Terrell, Darrin Wilson and Kimi Ackerman; fourteen great-grandchildren: Juliun, Peyton and Vincent Pontoni, Wyatt Gardner, Gabe and Isaac Martinez, Owen and Ellie Hopkins, Morgan (Patrick) Valois, Geoffrey Bryant, Mercedes, Preston, Madison and Tony Dyer. He was preceded in death by a daughter Virginia Lee (Ginger) Jorgensen; his parents, sister Betty Jane Webber and brothers: William K. and Robert A. Dyer.  Gordon served in the U.S. Army, Infantry during WWII in France and Germany where he received several medals. He also served in the Virginia Army National Guard. For 32 years Gordon worked for the U.S. Government. He had a major roll in formulating the concepts, initiatives and growth of the Federal Catalog program, first in Washington, D.C. and later at the Federal Center in Battle Creek. He was employed there from 1964 until his retirement in 1977 and then worked several years in real estate. Gordon was a member of Westlake Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7, and volunteered for several years transporting veterans to Ann Arbor and Detroit for medical treatment. He was a member of the National Association of retired Federal Employees and the American Association of Retired Persons. Gordon looked forward to going to Florida in the winter, where he played golf and attended many Detroit Tigers baseball games. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Westlake Presbyterian Church, 415 S. 28 ^th Street, Battle Creek, with Rev. Roger D. Grandia officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Private inurnment will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
